Must have the script lock & financing in place for Pre-production to take place Step #1: Prepare the budget Prepare a preliminary schedule Send out ‘location scout’ – may take a week to a month to find & lock down the location for the movie => Initial Scout by:  Producer, Director, DP, & Production Designer! Finalize on locations (recommended by ‘location scout’) with department heads – have 1 or 2 day to decide! Step #2: Location is signed and rented (by Producer) Hire location manager (by Producer) Jobs of Location Manager: Security, parking, portable toilets Establish source of electricity alongside the gaffer (aka lighting engineer) Liaison between the producer and the owner of the location Responsible for ensuring that both the production’s and location’s requirements & obligations are met Step #3: Hire Line Producer or Unit Production Manager (or UPM) Jobs of Line Producer or UPM:  (Most anal person on the crew!)
