This week we were able to review many of the notes we have been working on relating to the script. There is a hope of doing one more draft and then actual prepping for the movie Joel and Don are bringing to life. It is cool to see the steps taken to get to that point but also the insight that goes into every little detail.
Joel said something to me that I thought was really profound when discussing writing and editing. He said to let the story be natural and not force it. He talked about letting the characters speaking to us instead of us trying to control everything. I actually agree. I think sometimes we can get so caught up in trying to create something that we forget to let it touch us back.
He also mentioned that writing is really about rewriting. I've never had a teacher or college professor tell me that. I mean I've always loved to write, but I never thought about it in that sense. I think sometimes I want my initial story or ideas to be so great when in reality there needs to be a couple of versions or drafts to get to that point. Seeing how the screenplay we've been working on goes through a series of surgeries I realize that enormous amount of hard work and team contribution builds something great.
I'm excited and hope to get to the production stage soon. It's crazy to see part of a dream come true instead of sitting in a classroom talking about it. It sort of feels surreal to be honest. There's still a long way to go, but it makes me feel grateful among everything. The more I learn and study with my mentor and Film Connection the more I love it.
